With the current state of Windows….IE a continuous build, software as a service (SaaS) product it can be difficult at time to determine the version of the current image you are working with. In the absence of more commercial tools available for building enterprise images, it can be less intuitive to grab information from a specified WIM / ESD from a client machine not relegated to image creation. This can be accomplished by using dism.exe as follows:
For a mounted Windows image containing an ESD compressed image:
dism /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:d:\sources\install.esd /index:1
For a mounted Windows image containing a more common WIM compressed image:
dism /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:d:\sources\install.wim /index:1
Modify the index flag to retrieve detailed version info for a specific index or omit it completely to list all of the contents.
